One common problem in the newsgroups is that readers do not have direct access to the specific groups they want. This is particularly true of the biz.marketplace groups, because a few sites do not carry the Biznet hierarchy. Just because you don't see a particular group in your newsgroup list does not mean that it doesn't exist. It only means that your Internet service provider doesn't subscribe to it [yet].
If you don't see a particular newsgroup, your first action should be to ask your system administrator to subscribe to it. Usually, just expressing an interest will be enough to convince her to find a newsfeed--a remote site that is willing to send that group's messages to your site. Or, in the case of many schools for instance, you may find out that your site doesn't permit commercial use of the news facilities, in which case you should not try to circumvent local policy.
Sometimes, certain groups are not carried at a site because of storage limits. If this is the case, or if you still have a dying urge to post to or read a specific group which your site won't carry, there are several free ways to receive those groups. These can be particularly useful if you live in Kazakhstan and your only news access is through Gopher and e-mail (a true story). For posting, a simple e-mail message to the right address will post your article. For reading, a number of open news servers and gopher news services are available for your perusal. But please, try to go through local channels first.
The best way to access other groups is to point your newsreader to a a public access Usenet site. You can usually configure a news server in your newsreading software, or you can use the World-Wide-Web. Either enter the name of the public access Usenet site in your news configuration, or enter a URL in your web browser like this:
news://[public access server]/[newsgroup name]
news://news.needfeed.com/biz.marketplace.non-computerYou can find links to several public news resources at Yahoo.
If you don't have access to a newsreader, you can check out ways to access the newsgroups by e-mail in Bob Rankin's Accessing the Internet by E-Mail FAQ in news.answers.
