Overview of Internet Commerce

What means of advertising are available?

Of the following list, can you pick which entry doesn't belong?

If you guessed firewall, you're absolutely correct. A firewall is a security mechanism. The other ten are services which you can use to globally communicate on the Internet. This list is not exhaustive, but these are the services the average user is most likely to come in contact with at some point in time.

Which are available for advertising?

In theory, all of them! In reality, several of them are not of much use for advertising. WAIS and Gopher have become obsolete because of the WWW. Allowing anonymous users to telnet, or log into your system, poses too many security headaches. CU-SeeMe is still too new and underdeveloped. Finally, talk may serve limited use in final negotiations, but it only supports one-to-one real-time communications.

That leaves the WWW, e-mail, IRC, FTP, and of course, newsgroups, for individuals and businesses to sell excess goods or promote their business. Information about these services is available through the workshop mentioned before; it is up to you to find out how to use them at your site. The rest of these pages are dedicated to helping you learn to use them to buy, sell, and promote appropriately.
