Overview of Internet Commerce

How do I put my ad on news/e-mail/world-wide-web?

Everybody has to start someplace. Unfortunately, on the Internet, several ways of using the many services have evolved. The underlying messages are set by protocols in documents called Requests For Comments maintained by a group called the Internet Engineering Task Force. Most users, however, never see these standards. Instead, countless user interfaces have been developed for each service. For example, the World-Wide-Web has a standard communications protocol. You, a user, have your choice of browsers which convert this protocol to something easier to use; Netscape Navigator, NCSA or Spry Mosaic, MS Internet Explorer, Lynx, Cello, and AOL and Prodigy's proprietary browsers are a few examples. No two programs work alike; the same is true with news, e-mail, FTP, and other services.

The best place to start, to get a basic understanding of each service, is a free on-line work-at-your-own-pace Information Superhighway Internet Training Workshop sponsored by MIT.

After the workshop, you will have to talk to your local system administrator to find out what programs you need to use to access these services. We would like to help more, but we could never begin to explain how to use each and every available piece of software for posting news. This beginning phase requires a lot of exploration on your part in order for you to learn more about your particular computer resources. Every site has its pecularities, and it is very important that you find out about the assorted tools available to you, and also about any local rules which you must abide by in addition to global Internet netiquette.
